    Breathwork for healthcare professionals

This continuation course for international healthcare professionals will provide an overview of how our breathing functions and delve into the core principles of breathwork.
    Dates & Registration

Breathwork has gained significant recognition in recent years for its essential role in health and well-being. This continuation course, Breathwork for Healthcare Professionals, explores the mechanics of breathing and dives into the foundational principles of breathwork.

Breathing directly influences the autonomic nervous system, and breathwork can be a powerful approach to addressing dysautonomia. Furthermore, it is an excellent tool for stress management. Did you know that 80% of the Western population, often due to stress, breathes too rapidly, too shallowly, and too much?

Since breathwork acts as a bridge between physical and mental health, integrating it into your therapy practice can be an invaluable addition to holistic treatment plans. This course will provide you with a strong foundation to effectively apply breathwork techniques in your sessions.

Beyond learning breathwork techniques, this course emphasizes the importance of self-care and personal development for therapists. You’ll gain both a thorough theoretical understanding—drawing from scientific and holistic perspectives—and practical experience with a variety of breathing techniques.

This continuing education course is suitable for maintaining your diploma in Western Medicine Fundamentals and/or Psychosociale Basiskennis.

Practical tip: We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and ensuring that you stay warm (especially your feet) during the sessions.

    2. What will you learn?

This course focuses on the anatomy, physiology, neurology, and psychology of breathing. It distinguishes between improving functional, everyday breathing and practicing deep, transformative breathwork.

Whether you’re treating clients with pain or tension-related issues, the ultimate goal is to enhance their self-healing abilities and help them rediscover a healthy homeostasis. Proper breathing significantly contributes to this, as it directly influences the autonomic nervous system.

During the course, you will explore:

    About the breathing techniques
Anyone in reasonably good health can fully participate. However, there are some relative contraindications. If you experience epilepsy, psychosis, severe anxiety disorders, serious heart conditions, high eye pressure, or if you’re pregnant, it’s advised to avoid intensive breathing and breath retention. These relative contraindications for specific breathing techniques will be thoroughly discussed during the course.

The topics of our continuing education courses align with the Western Medicine Fundamentals (WMF) and/or Psychosocial Basic Knowledge (PsBK). These courses are designed to deepen and/or expand your knowledge. Our continuing education programs are accredited by SNRO, approved by CGO/Fong.

Out of love for your profession
Did you know that insurers require therapists to participate in at least one continuing education course per year to maintain the validity of their WMF or PsBK diploma?

In line with our vision, continuing education is an act of love—for yourself, your profession, and others. It reflects a desire to continuously grow as a healthcare professional. Participating in continuing education is a valuable investment in every sense: you stay up-to-date with developments in the field in an enjoyable and educational way, meet healthcare professionals from diverse disciplines, and maintain your WMF and/or PsBK credentials.

    Preparation, course day, certificate
You prepare for the course at home by reading the literature and completing homework assignments. The course day runs from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. After the course, you can download your certificate in your online learning environment.

    6. Practical Example

A 45-year-old woman suffering from chronic pain due to fibromyalgia and stress-related issues visits your practice. With the knowledge gained from this course, you can guide her in rebalancing her autonomic nervous system using calming breath techniques. By teaching her methods such as nasal breathing, extending exhalation, and other approaches that improve daily breathing, you can help reduce her tendency to over-breathe. This supports her self-reliance and contributes to patient empowerment.

    7. Instructor

Peter Vermeiren is a certified breathwork instructor with expertise in nearly all types of breathing methods. With a background in physiotherapy, mindfulness, compassion training, and digital health, Peter is the founder of Breath & Energy. He facilitates breathwork sessions and workshops for individuals, groups, and businesses, combining techniques from practices such as pranayama, holotropic breathwork, transformational breathing, classical tantra, and Buddhist methods like tumo breathing.
